Social Media At Its Best

By Amber Farley, Director of Interactive Services and Media

As an agency that helps our clients learn about and get started in social media, we often get asked “What is the best way for community banks to utilize the social media landscape”?  And although there are many benefits to using social media, there isn’t one perfect response to that question.  I did however come across a tweet yesterday that served as an “Ah-Ha” moment that I wanted to share.

CNN Money released an article yesterday that announced how BofA would be rolling out a $5/month fee to its customers for those who use their debit card.  The article itself has been quite controversial, but what was even more interesting was the fact that shortly after the article was released—Texas First Bank tweeted the following:

Talk about communicating a timely message that is VERY relevant to their community members. If I was a BofA customer in the Texas area, I would certainly be intrigued by this community bank’s tweet. And while I can’t speak on behalf of the bank, I imagine that they chose to use Twitter to communicate a message to their social media followers that they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to communicate as quickly with more traditional media channels.

A few hours later, USAA released the tweet below and a press release announcing that it has no plans to add fees to its debit card. USAA remains committed to offering a free checking account, free online banking—and a free debit card.

Job well done, Texas First Bank and USAA.
